Awareness. Action. Accountability. All year round.

It’s that time of year again when the Center for Women’s Global Leadership launches its 16 Days of Activism campaign. It’s part of their goal to eliminate gender-based violence.

This year, we call for you to not only have awareness for 16 days but all 365 of the year. We should unite together to end violence against women and girls all year round.

The 16 days commence on November 25 and conclude on December 10 when we also recognise Human Rights Day.

For 2022, attention is being given to the theme of raising awareness of femicide: being murdered because you are a woman.

Did you know that every 11 minutes, a girl was killed by a family member in 2020?
On average, there are 100 femicide cases every day. These are needless deaths committed by intimate partners and family members.

Together, we can amplify femicide awareness, demand governments to take action, and unite on our movements. Join us as we declare December 6 the international day to end Femicide.

To mark the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence we have brought you 16 facts you won’t believe are true when it comes to gender-based violence.

1 in 3 women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime
As many as 38% of murders of women are committed by a male partner (globally)
200 million women and girls have experienced female genital mutilation/cutting
Each year, 15 million girls are married before the age of 18. That is 28 girls every minute!
It is estimated that up to 10 million children are victims of child sexual exploitation
1 in 4 girls say that they never feel comfortable using a school toilet due to school-related gender-based violence
As many as 1 in 4 women experience physical and/or sexual violence during pregnancy

Gender-based violence is a learned behaviour. Because of this, it can be unlearned. Education is key to breaking the cycle of gender-based violence

The time is now to take action and together advance the human rights of women. The Zinthiya Trust stands alongside UN Women and the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership to advocate and raise awareness of the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence.
